Hello, I am Sukhmani, a freelance photojournalist based in Manhattan, New York with a passion for community-based stories, medicine, and public policy.
Through my photography, I focus on sharing the stories of different communities and showcasing their emotions through intimate details spotlit in their natural environments.
During my time at the University of Pennsylvania, I immersed myself into the world of journalism through photography, reporting, and audience engagement. I served as an editor for the Penn Science Undergraduate Research Journal and Director of Photography with Penn Lens. With the Daily Pennsylvanian, the award-winning student newspaper, I have developed my unique style of conveying newsworthy stories as a senior staff photographer and science reporter. I formerly served as the Senior Photo Editor in 2020 and Summer Multimedia Editor in 2019.
Recent events I have covered include the 2020 election throughout Pennsylvania, Penn Professor of Medicine Drew Weissman and his laboratory's mRNA research which provided the foundation of the Pfizer/BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine, Philadelphians receiving the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, and Black Lives Matter, Ban off our Bodies, and Stop Asian Hate protests in 2021.
I'm a graduate student member of the National Photographer Press Association, South Asian Journalist Association, and Asian American Journalist Association.
